M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Near San Julian, Philippines

San Julian, Philippines —
What happened: A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck just offshore of Eastern Samar province early this morning, centered about 7 kilometers southeast of the town of San Julian. The quake hit at a depth of 10 kilometers — shallow, which means the shaking was felt more strongly near the epicenter. It struck at 1:04 AM Central Time Tuesday, which was just after 2:00 in the afternoon local time in the Philippines.
Impacts: People near San Julian would have felt a firm jolt as the shallow quake rolled through. Early data shows no damage reports and no injuries. Earthquakes of this size do not trigger tsunami alerts, and no tsunami threat was expected from this event.
What to do:
- If shaking starts, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until it stops.
- Stay inside and away from windows — falling objects are the biggest danger in a quake this size.
- After the shaking ends, check your home for hazards like gas smells, cracked walls, or fallen power lines before settling back in.
- Expect possible aftershocks over the next hours and be ready to drop, cover, and hold on again.
