M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Near Port-Olry, Vanuatu
Port-Olry, Vanuatu — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck in the waters northwest of Port-Olry, Vanuatu, on Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
What happened: The quake hit at 10:08 AM CDT (3:08 PM local time in Vanuatu), centered about 154 kilometers northwest of Port-Olry, at a depth of about 10 kilometers. A magnitude 4.6 quake is strong enough to be felt nearby, but quakes at this size and distance from shore typically cause little damage.
Impacts: No tsunami warning was issued for this quake, and the Geological Survey's early summary listed no felt reports and no damage reports. Shaking would have been most noticeable near the epicenter, fading quickly with distance.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking, and stay clear of windows and heavy objects that could fall.
- After the shaking stops, check yourself and those around you for injuries and check for hazards like broken glass, gas leaks, or damaged wiring.
- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this in the hours and days ahead.
- If you are near the coast and feel strong shaking, move to higher ground right away, even without an official warning.
