M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Near Nagqu, China

Nagqu, China — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck a remote stretch of the Tibetan Plateau on Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
What happened:
The quake hit at 8:26 a.m. Central Time on Saturday, October 24, 2026, centered about 195 kilometers (roughly 121 miles) northeast of Nagqu, China, at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The USGS lists the event as reviewed.
Impacts:
The USGS shows no felt reports for this quake, and no damage reports have come in from the sparsely populated high-plateau region. Because the epicenter was far inland, there is no tsunami threat.
What to do:
- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.
- After the shaking, check for hazards such as broken glass, gas leaks, and cracked walls before re-entering a damaged building.
- Expect aftershocks — smaller quakes can follow in the hours and days after a main shock.
