M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Near Kuril'sk, Russia

Kuril'sk, Russia — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck in the ocean northeast of Kuril'sk, Russia, late Sunday night Central Time.

What happened: The quake hit at 10:45 PM Central Time on Sunday, November 1, about 201 kilometers northeast of Kuril'sk. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake in the Kuril Islands region of the northwest Pacific.

Impacts: No felt reports or damage reports had been confirmed at the time of this report, and no tsunami warning was issued with this quake. The epicenter sits offshore in a remote island chain, which limits exposure to strong shaking on land.

What to do: If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops. Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall. After the shaking stops, check for hazards such as gas leaks, broken glass, and damaged walls before moving around. Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this one.
