M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Near Guam

A digital news alert for an earthquake near Guam.

Yigo, Guam — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck in the waters northeast of Guam early this morning, rattling the island but producing no reports of damage.

What happened: The quake hit at 6:06 p.m. Guam time on Wednesday, October 21 (3:06 a.m. CT on October 22). Its center was about 49 kilometers — roughly 30 miles — northeast of Yigo Village, at a depth of about 99 kilometers (62 miles). That depth helped soften the shaking at the surface.

Impacts: The U.S. Geological Survey received nine felt reports from the Guam area. No tsunami threat was issued, and no damage has been reported. Quakes of this size are common along the active plate boundary near Guam, and deep ones like this one usually cause little more than a brief tremor.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until it stops.

- Check your home and workplace for cracked walls, fallen items, or gas smells, and report anything serious to local authorities.

- Stay ready for aftershocks, which can follow in the hours and days ahead.
