M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Near Farkhar, Afghanistan
Farkhar, Afghanistan — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck about 41 kilometers south of Farkhar on Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
What happened: The quake hit at 9:09 AM Central Time, at a depth of about 115 kilometers (71 miles). A quake that deep usually spreads its shaking over a wide area but with less force at the surface than a shallow quake of the same size.
Impacts: The USGS reported no tsunami threat from this quake, and no felt reports or damage reports were listed at the time of this report. Northeastern Afghanistan sits in a seismically active region, so shaking may have been noticed in nearby towns and valleys.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking, and stay away from windows and heavy objects that could fall.
- After shaking stops, check yourself and others for injuries and check your home for hazards such as gas leaks, broken glass, and damaged walls.
- Stay alert for aftershocks, which can follow in the hours and days after a quake.
- Do not re-enter a damaged building until it has been checked.
