M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Guatemala

San José El Ídolo, Guatemala — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake rattled southwestern Guatemala on Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
What happened: The quake hit at 9:47 AM Central time, centered about 5 kilometers east of San José El Ídolo at a depth of roughly 110 kilometers. That is a deep quake — the kind that can spread shaking over a wider area while staying milder at the surface.
Impacts: No damage has been reported so far, and this quake carries no tsunami threat. No immediate reports of injuries have surfaced.
What to do:
- If you feel shaking: drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until it stops.
- Stay away from windows and tall furniture that could tip over.
- After the shaking stops, check your home for cracks, gas smells, or fallen power lines.
- Expect aftershocks — smaller tremors often follow the first quake.
