M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Vanuatu — Friday, November 6, 2026

Isangel, Vanuatu — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck deep beneath the South Pacific near Vanuatu early Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
What happened:
The quake hit at 2:14 a.m. Central Time on Friday, November 6, centered about 87 kilometers north of Isangel, on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu. It struck about 247 kilometers below the surface, roughly 153 miles down, far deeper than most earthquakes people feel.
Impacts:
Because the quake was so deep, shaking at the surface was likely light. The Geological Survey has received no reports of people feeling it, no damage has been reported, and no tsunami threat was issued.
What to do:
- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until it stops.
- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.
- After the shaking stops, check for hazards like gas leaks or broken glass before moving around.
- Be ready for aftershocks in the hours after a quake.
