M4.5 Earthquake Strikes the Banda Sea

Banda Sea, Indonesia — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake rumbled deep beneath the Banda Sea in eastern Indonesia early Monday morning, far below the surface and far from any major city.
What happened: The quake struck at about 1:15 AM Central Time, centered under the Banda Sea at a depth of roughly 158 kilometers — about 98 miles down. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the event at magnitude 4.5. No tsunami warning was issued.
Impacts: Because the quake was so deep, shaking at the surface was likely light, even in communities nearest the epicenter. No tsunami threat exists from this event, and no damage reports have come in so far.
What to do:
- If you feel shaking, drop, cover, and hold on until it passes.
- Afterward, check your home for hazards — gas lines, water pipes, and cracks in walls.
- Expect the possibility of aftershocks in the hours ahead and keep a safe spot clear of heavy furniture.
