M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Romania

M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Romania
Vrancea County, Romania — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook eastern Romania early this morning, striking just west of the town of Lunca Jariștei in Vrancea County.
What happened: The quake hit at 3:51 AM Central Time (8:51 AM local time), the U.S. Geological Survey reports. It struck about 1.2 miles west of Lunca Jariștei at a depth of roughly 125 kilometers — a deep quake, which is typical of this part of Romania's Vrancea seismic zone. Deep earthquakes like this one can be felt over a wide area even when they cause little damage.
Impacts: The USGS has not yet published shaking-intensity or felt-report data for this event, and no damage reports have surfaced. No tsunami is possible — the epicenter is well inland. Deep-focus quakes in the Vrancea zone are common, and Romania's civil protection authorities routinely monitor the region because it has produced the country's strongest historic earthquakes.
What to do:
- If you felt shaking, check your home for damage — cracks in walls, fallen objects, gas or water leaks.
- Be alert for aftershocks, which are common after quakes of this size.
- If you are indoors during a quake, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on.
- Report shaking to your local authorities or the national emergency line if you noticed strong movement.
