M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Northern Chile

Breaking news graphic for a 4.5 magnitude earthquake in northern Chile.

Ollagüe, Chile — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the high Andes of northern Chile early Saturday morning, shaking ground near the Chile-Bolivia border.

What happened: The quake hit about 57 kilometers southwest of Ollagüe, Chile, at 4:53 AM Central Time on Saturday, November 7, 2026. The U.S. Geological Survey puts the depth at about 111 kilometers, or roughly 69 miles, below the surface. A quake that deep usually spreads its shaking over a wide area but feels weaker at the surface than a shallow one of the same size.

Impacts: No felt reports had been filed with the USGS as of this report, and no damage reports have come in. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued no tsunami threat for this quake, and none is expected from a land quake of this size and depth.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until it stops.

- Stay away from windows and anything that could fall.

- After the shaking, check for hazards like gas leaks or broken glass before moving around.

- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this in the hours ahead.
