M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Near Futuna Island
Alo, Wallis and Futuna —
What happened: A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck about 100 kilometers south-southwest of Alo on Futuna Island early Tuesday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey says it hit at 3:58 a.m. Central Daylight Time, centered deep below the surface — about 417 kilometers (roughly 260 miles) down. The epicenter sat in the South Pacific, west of the Samoan Islands.
Impacts: Because this quake was so deep, any shaking at the surface would have been weak to unfelt. No damage reports have come in, and no tsunami threat was issued.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on if you feel shaking.
- Once the shaking stops, check your surroundings for hazards like broken glass or fallen objects.
- Aftershocks can follow a quake — stay alert and ready to protect yourself again.
