M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Near Fiji

Suva, Fiji —
What happened:
A magnitude 4.5 earthquake rumbled deep beneath the South Pacific this morning near Fiji. The U.S. Geological Survey puts the epicenter about 193 kilometers east-northeast of Levuka, at a depth of nearly 572 kilometers — among the deepest quakes the region sees. The event was recorded at 7:19 AM Central Time (12:19 AM local time in Fiji).
Impacts:
A quake buried that far down loses its punch before it ever reaches the surface. There are no reports of shaking felt on Fiji's islands, no damage, and — because of the extreme depth — no tsunami threat.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on during any shaking, wherever you are.
- Stay clear of glass, unsecured furniture, and heavy objects overhead.
- Once the shaking passes, look around for hazards like broken glass or shifted items.
- Be ready for aftershocks — they can follow for hours or days.
