M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Near Barishal, Pakistan
Barishal, Pakistan — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Pakistan on Tuesday evening, shaking the ground in the region around the Arabian Sea coastline.
What happened: The quake was centered about 115 kilometers (roughly 71 miles) north-northeast of Barishal, Pakistan, and struck at 6:16 PM Central time Tuesday. It originated at a depth of about 66 kilometers (41 miles) below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which has reviewed the event.
Impacts: Because the quake struck deep below the surface, the shaking at ground level was expected to be light and brief, and it did not trigger a tsunami — the USGS tsunami flag for this event is off. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the coastal region.
What to do:
- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay away from windows and heavy objects that could fall.
- Check your home for cracked walls, broken gas lines, or spilled hazards once shaking ends.
- Be ready for aftershocks — smaller quakes can follow in the hours ahead.
