M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Nagqu Region of China

Nagqu, China —
What happened:
A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck a remote stretch of northern Tibet on Friday morning, October 23, 2026, at 9:41 AM Central Time. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter about 233 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
Shallow quakes of this size can rattle nearby towns and villages, but this one hit an isolated area of the Tibetan Plateau, far from any major city.
Impacts:
As of this afternoon, the USGS had received no felt reports and no damage alerts from this earthquake. The agency's automated systems issued no tsunami flag and no shaking-alert rating. In this sparsely populated high-altitude region, a magnitude 4.5 event typically causes light shaking near the epicenter and is not felt far away.
There were no reports of injuries or structural damage at the time of this report.
What to do:
If you are in the area and feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops. Once it is over, check your surroundings for hazards such as falling objects, cracked walls, or damaged gas lines. Stay alert for aftershocks, which can follow a shallow earthquake like this one in the hours and days ahead.
