What happened:
The quake hit at 9:05 AM Central Time on Saturday, November 7, 2026. Its epicenter was in the Fiji region of the South Pacific, south of the main Fiji islands. The earthquake was very deep, about 572 kilometers (355 miles) below the surface. The USGS lists the quake as reviewed, with a magnitude type of body-wave magnitude.
Impacts:
No tsunami threat was issued for this earthquake. Because the quake was so deep, shaking at the surface was likely light and limited. No felt reports had been filed with the USGS as of this report, and no damage reports have come in.
What to do:
If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.
After shaking stops, check yourself and those around you for injuries, then check your home for hazards like gas leaks or damaged wiring.
Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this one.
