M4.5 Earthquake Strikes Eastern Russia

Breaking news alert for an earthquake in Russia displayed on a digital news screen.

Zyryanka, Russia — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook a remote stretch of far eastern Russia on Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

What happened:

The quake struck at 1:01 PM Central Time on Friday, October 30, centered about 236 kilometers east-southeast of Zyryanka in the Sakha Republic of eastern Siberia. It happened at a depth of about 10 kilometers, which is considered shallow. Shallow quakes can be felt more strongly near the epicenter than deeper ones of the same size.

Impacts:

The epicenter sits in a sparsely populated region, far from major cities, and the Geological Survey has no reports of damage so far. No felt reports have been filed with the agency, and no tsunami threat was issued for this quake. Earthquakes of this size can rattle buildings and knock loose objects off shelves near the epicenter, but they do not typically cause major damage.

What to do:

- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking. Get under a sturdy table and stay there until the shaking stops.

- Stay away from windows, hanging objects, and anything that could fall.

- After the shaking stops, check for hazards like broken glass, gas leaks, and damaged power lines before moving around.

- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this in the hours and days ahead.
