Governor Abbott Activates Emergency Resources Ahead of Flood Threat in South and West Texas

Austin, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to mobilize additional state emergency response resources ahead of several rounds of thunderstorms expected to bring heavy rain and flash flooding to South and West Texas.
WHAT IS HAPPENING:
The governor gave the order on Friday, November 6. The National Weather Service expects the storms to begin later Friday night and last through the early part of next week. The main threat is heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding, especially in the Rio Grande Valley, the Texas Border region, and the Coastal Bend.
LOCAL IMPACTS:
State crews and equipment are being staged to support local officials. Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Task Force 3 are sending swiftwater and floodwater rescue boat squads and high-profile vehicles to help with flood rescues. The Texas Division of Emergency Management is sending regional personnel to support the deployed teams. The Texas Department of Transportation is watching roadway and travel conditions. The Texas Emergency Medical Task Force is sending severe weather support packages made up of medics, ambulances, and all-terrain vehicles. Other state agencies are also watching power outages, road conditions, farm and livestock needs, the natural gas supply, and air, water, and wastewater systems.
WHAT TO DO:
If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
Turn around, do not drown. Never drive through flooded roads or around barricades, and never walk through moving water.
Keep a way to get weather warnings overnight, since the storms are expected to run through the night and into next week.
If you live near a creek, river, or low-water crossing in South or West Texas, know your route to higher ground before the rain starts.
