Prescott, Ariz. — The National Weather Service in Flagstaff has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the Granite Creek basin in Yavapai County, in effect until 4:00 PM MST Sunday.

What is happening: At 1:00 PM MST, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dropping heavy rain over the Granite Creek basin in west-central Arizona. Between half an inch and an inch of rain has already fallen, and another half inch to an inch is possible before the warning ends. Flash flooding is happening now or about to begin.

Local impacts: The danger zone centers on the Granite Creek basin — downtown Prescott and Whipple are in the flood path. State Route 89 is threatened between mile markers 308 and 311 and again between 314 and 315. White Spar Campground and AC Williams Granite Creek Park are inside the warning area, along with Butte Creek, Bannon Creek, Willow Creek, Granite Creek and Miller Creek. The Weather Service rates the flooding threat life-threatening.

What to do:

- Get out of Granite Creek right now — the water is rising and it can turn deadly fast.

- Stay away from creeks, washes and low roads — never try to drive through floodwater.

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
