Flash Flood Warning for Western North Carolina Through 1:15 PM

Breaking news alert screen for flash flood warning in Western North Carolina.

Asheville, North Carolina — Flash flooding remains a life-threatening danger across western North Carolina this morning, with three Flash Flood Warnings in effect as heavy rain keeps falling.

What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg reports river levels along the Green and Upper Broad rivers staying elevated into this afternoon. Meanwhile, a line of training thunderstorms is dumping torrential rain — 1 to 2 inches in less than an hour — across Burke and Caldwell counties, and an extended warning covers Avery, Burke, and Caldwell counties through 1:00 PM Eastern. The latest warning, for Burke and Caldwell counties, runs until 1:15 PM Eastern.

Local impacts:

Flash flooding of creeks and streams, city streets, highways, and underpasses is ongoing or expected. The extra rain raises the risk of landslides and debris flows, especially where slides have happened before. Communities seeing flooding include Columbus, Tryon, Lake Lure, Saluda, Chimney Rock Village, Chimney Rock State Park, Bat Cave, Lake Adger, Mill Spring, and Green Hill.

What to do:

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive on flooded roads. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid low-water crossings.

- Be ready to move quickly if a landslide or debris flow threatens your area.
