Flash Flood Warning for Washington Parish and Pearl River County Through 2:00 AM

Washington Parish, Louisiana — The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Flash Flood Warning for southeastern Washington Parish in Louisiana and west central Pearl River County in Mississippi, in effect until 2:00 AM Sunday.

What is happening:

Heavy thunderstorms have been dropping intense rain across the warned area since late Saturday night. Doppler radar showed storms producing downpours over ground that has already taken in between 4 and 8 inches of rain. Another 1 to 3 inches could fall before the warning ends, and flash flooding is already underway in spots or expected to begin shortly.

Local impacts:

Roads in low-lying areas and near small creeks and streams are at risk of flooding quickly, and water can rise fast enough to cover roadways with little warning. Driving through flooded streets is the leading cause of flood deaths, and even a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the road.

What to do:

- Never drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don't drown.

- If you come to water covering the roadway, find another route, even if it takes longer.

- Stay out of drainage ditches, culverts, and low-water crossings.

- If you live near a creek or in a low spot, be ready to move to higher ground quickly.

- Keep an eye on local conditions through the night and do not walk through moving floodwater.
