Flash Flood Warning for Washington County Through 5:00 PM

A digital news alert screen showing a flood warning for Washington County, Utah.

St. George, Utah — Life-threatening flash flooding is expected inside Zion National Park, and the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has a Flash Flood Warning in effect for east central Washington County until 5:00 PM Central time today.

What is happening: Thunderstorms are dropping heavy rain over Zion Canyon, where radar shows up to a quarter inch has already fallen and another quarter to half inch is possible. Flash flooding is ongoing or will begin shortly across the warned area.

Local impacts: The warning specifically covers flash flooding of slot canyons and normally dry washes — the narrow canyons inside the park are the danger zones. If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

What to do:

- Move to higher ground now. Do not wait to see the water rise.

- Stay away from slot canyons, dry washes, river banks, and culverts — they can turn deadly fast and their banks can give way.

- Hikers and campers: get away from streams and creeks and know where you are relative to the water.
