Catron County, NM — The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for southwestern Catron County in west-central New Mexico, in effect through midnight MDT tonight.
What is happening: At 8:07 PM MDT, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dropping heavy rain over the warned area. Up to 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen, and another inch is possible. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
Local impacts: Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, along with other poor-drainage and low-lying areas. Communities in the warned area include Mogollon, Alma, Glenwood and Pleasanton.
What to do:
- Never drive through a flooded road — most flood deaths happen in cars. Turn around, don't drown.
- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
- Stay away from creeks, washes and drainage channels — they can flood with little warning.
- Be extra careful after dark; it is nearly impossible to tell how deep floodwater is at night.
