# Flash Flood Warning for Socorro County Through 1:15 AM

Socorro County, NM —

UPDATE 10:22 PM MDT — The National Weather Service has declared a Flash Flood Emergency for Socorro and Luis Lopez. This is a particularly dangerous situation. Seek higher ground now.

What is happening:

The weather service in Albuquerque has extended the Flash Flood Warning for central Socorro County in central New Mexico until 1:15 AM MDT. Trained spotters report thunderstorms are dropping heavy rain across northern Socorro, with as much as 6 inches already fallen near and just west of the Socorro area. Another inch and a half of rain is possible. Flash flooding is already underway.

Local impacts:

The warning covers life-threatening flash flooding of low-water crossings, small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Floodwater is moving through the Socorro and Luis Lopez areas right now.

What to do:

- Move to higher ground now if you are anywhere near a creek, stream, or low-water crossing.

- Do not travel unless you are fleeing a flooded area or are under an evacuation order.

- Turn around, don't drown — most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Never drive through flooded roads.
