# Flash Flood Warning for Socorro County, NM Through 8:00 PM

Socorro County, New Mexico — The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for west-central Socorro County until 8:00 PM Mountain time tonight, as thunderstorms dump heavy rain over the area and flash flooding gets underway.

## What is happening:

Around 5:05 PM Mountain time, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across west-central Socorro County. Up to two inches of rain have already fallen, and it is coming down at one to one-and-a-half inches per hour, with another inch possible. Flash flooding is already happening in places and is expected to start shortly in others.

The warned area includes the town of Magdalena and Highway 60 between Mile Markers 100 and 119.

## Local impacts:

Expect flash flooding of small creeks and streams, along with flooding across streets, highways, underpasses, and other low-lying areas with poor drainage. Water can rise fast on roadways after this much rain in a short time.

## What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive on a flooded road. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Stay aware of your surroundings and watch for water rising across roadways.

- If you come to water of unknown depth, find another way around it.
