What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for west central Santa Fe County through 5:15 PM Mountain time. Radar shows thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across the warned area — up to an inch has already fallen, with rainfall rates near an inch and a half in under an hour. Flooding is either happening now or about to start.

Local impacts:

Small creeks and streams are rising fast, and low-lying spots are in the worst position — especially in and around Eldorado at Santa Fe, Cerrillos Hills State Park, Los Cerrillos, Madrid, and along Gallisteo Creek. Expect flooding in poor-drainage areas, streets, underpasses, and highways. In hilly terrain, the low-water crossings can turn dangerous in a hurry.

What to do:

- Never drive through flooded roads — turn around and find another way. Most flood deaths happen in cars.

- Don't try to cross flooded low-water crossings; water can be far deeper than it looks.

- If you live near a creek or arroyo, stay alert and move to higher ground if water starts rising.

- Give emergency crews room to work and avoid parking in washes or low dips.
