**UPDATE — Monday, September 28, 6:17 PM CT:** The California Highway Patrol reports flooding on US-95 just north of Goffs, where thunderstorms along Interstate 40 and US-95 have dropped half an inch to an inch and a half of rain. Searchlight, Cal-Nev-Ari, Essex and the Highway 95/I-40 junction are in the flooding zone; the warning holds through 6:30 PM PDT.

San Bernardino County, California — The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued a Flash Flood Warning for San Bernardino County in southern California and south central Clark County in southern Nevada, in effect until 6:30 PM PDT Monday.

What is happening:

At 2:31 PM PDT, Doppler radar picked up thunderstorms dumping heavy rain between Searchlight in far southern Nevada and Essex in California. Between half an inch and an inch of rain has already fallen, and forecasters say flash flooding is happening now or about to start as new storms keep firing up and pushing east through the afternoon.

Local impacts:

The weather service calls this life-threatening flash flooding. Creeks and streams can rise fast, and water can cover urban streets, highways, and underpasses with little warning. Low water crossings in the desert terrain are especially dangerous in heavy rain.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive through flooded roads.

- Most flood deaths happen in vehicles, so find another route.

- Be cautious at every low water crossing; water there can deepen in minutes.

- Stay alert even if the rain misses you — flooding can travel downstream.
