Amarillo, Texas — What is happening: Doppler radar is tracking a fresh round of heavy thunderstorms over Potter and Randall counties in the Texas Panhandle. Between 1 and 4 inches of rain have already fallen across the warned area, and up to another inch could fall before the rain lets up. The warning runs through 12:30 PM Friday. Local impacts: Flash flooding is happening now or about to begin. Small creeks and streams are rising, and water is covering low spots, highways, streets, and underpasses, along with urban areas and other places that drain poorly. Amarillo sits inside the warning area and is directly in the path of this runoff. What to do: Never drive through a flooded road — most flood deaths happen in cars. If water covers the pavement ahead, turn around and find another route. Watch your surroundings closely; water can rise quickly in dips, creeks, and underpasses.
