Flash Flood Warning for Pontotoc, Coal, Hughes and Johnston Counties Through 7:30 AM

# Flash Flood Warning for Pontotoc, Coal, Hughes and Johnston Counties Through 7:30 AM

**Southeastern Oklahoma —** The National Weather Service in Norman has issued a Flash Flood Warning for southeastern Oklahoma, covering east-central Pontotoc County, Coal County, southeastern Hughes County and northeastern Johnston County. The warning runs through 7:30 AM CDT Thursday.

**What is happening:** A line of thunderstorms settled over the region before dawn, and Doppler radar showed heavy rain falling at about 4:36 AM. Between 2 and 4 inches of rain have already come down across the warned area, and another inch is possible before the rain moves out. Flash flooding is already underway in spots and is expected to begin in others very soon.

**Local impacts:** Expect flash flooding on small creeks and streams, across city streets, highways and underpasses, and in low-lying spots and areas with poor drainage. Water can rise quickly in the dark hours before sunrise. Some communities in the path include Coalgate and Ada-area towns across the four counties.

**What to do:**

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive through a flooded road. If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

- Most flood deaths happen in vehicles, so find a way around or wait it out.

- Be extra careful at night, when it is harder to see how deep the water is.
