Flash Flood Warning for Nueces County Through 12:45 PM

Breaking news alert for flash flood warning in Nueces County, Texas.

Corpus Christi, Texas — The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi has issued a Flash Flood Warning for central Nueces County in south central Texas, in effect until 12:45 PM Central Time today, Sunday, November 8.

What is happening: Thunderstorms are dropping heavy rain across central Nueces County this morning. Radar and automated rain gauges show between 1 and 2 inches of rain have already fallen, and the rain is coming down at a rate of 1.5 to 2.5 inches per hour. Another 2 to 4 inches are possible before the rain lets up. Flash flooding is already happening in spots and is expected to begin shortly in others. The warning covers Corpus Christi and the surrounding area.

Local impacts: Rising water is a threat for small creeks and streams, city streets, highways and underpasses, and low-lying spots with poor drainage. Places in the warned area include Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi International Airport, downtown Corpus Christi, North Beach, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, Del Mar College, Driscoll Children's Hospital, Bay Area Medical Center and Spohn Hospital South. The warning also covers Interstate 37 between mile markers 1 and 9 and U.S. Highway 181 between mile markers 646 and 648.

What to do: Turn around, do not drown. Never drive through a flooded road, and never drive around a barricade. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles, so if you come to water over the road, find another way. If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately. Stay away from creeks, streams and drainage ditches during heavy rain. Do not walk through moving water. Even a few inches of fast-moving water can knock a person down.
