**UPDATE — Monday, September 28, 6:12 PM CT:** The National Weather Service has extended this warning until 6:15 PM MDT. Storm chasers report arroyos along Highway 185 remain dangerously full, though the water appears to have crested and is slowly draining off; Peaceful Valley is among the areas still seeing flooding.

Dona Ana County, New Mexico — The National Weather Service in El Paso and Santa Teresa has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northwestern Dona Ana County in south central New Mexico, in effect until 5:15 PM MDT Monday.

What is happening:

At 3:20 PM MDT, radar showed thunderstorms dropping torrential rain between Hatch and Radium Springs. Up to an inch of rain has already fallen in the basins that feed several low water crossings along Highway 185, and forecasters say dangerous flooding is likely along that highway south of Hatch and north of Radium Springs. Flash flooding is ongoing or about to begin.

Local impacts:

The weather service warns of life-threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Arroyos and washes can turn into raging, killer currents in minutes — even in spots that are not getting rain right now, since water rushes down from distant storms.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive onto flooded roads.

- Most flood deaths happen in vehicles; pick an alternate route instead.

- Know your surroundings and watch for rising water near washes and crossings.

- Remember flooding can strike even where the sky is clear above you.
