What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Hastings has issued a Flash Flood Warning for north central Kansas — Jewell County, northwestern Mitchell County, central Osborne County and southeastern Smith County — in effect until 5:15 AM CDT Saturday. Doppler radar and automated rain gauges showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain late Friday night. Between 2 and 4 inches of rain had already fallen, coming down at a rate of half an inch to an inch and a half per hour. Another 1 to 2 inches is possible. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

Local impacts:

Expect rapid rises on creeks and streams, and flooding on streets, highways and underpasses, in urban areas, and in low-lying spots with poor drainage across the warned counties.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown. Never drive through flooded roads — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Be especially careful at night. It is much harder to recognize the dangers of flooding after dark.

- Stay off roads that are already taking on water, and never walk through moving floodwater.
