Cottonwood Cove, Nevada — Thunderstorms are dumping heavy rain along the Colorado River corridor this afternoon, and the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for west central Mohave County, Arizona, and south central Clark County, Nevada, until 6:15 PM PDT.

What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas issued the warning at 3:11 PM PDT after Doppler radar showed thunderstorms stalled near Cottonwood Cove. Between half an inch and three-quarters of an inch of rain has already fallen, and forecasters say flash flooding is happening now or will begin shortly, with more storms building into northwest Arizona. Dolan Springs, Cottonwood Cove, the Cottonwood Cove Campground and Willow Beach are all in the warned area.

Local impacts:

The Weather Service calls this life-threatening flash flooding — desert washes, creeks and streams can rise in minutes, and water can sweep across highways, city streets and underpasses with no warning. Desert ground drains fast, which is exactly what makes it so dangerous.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive through a flooded road.

- Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- If you are camping or recreating near washes, move to higher ground now.
