Flash Flood Warning for McKinley and Sandoval Counties Through 7:30 PM MDT

McKinley and Sandoval Counties, New Mexico — The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northeastern McKinley County and western Sandoval County in north central New Mexico, in effect until 7:30 PM MDT on Saturday, October 24, 2026.
What is happening: Thunderstorms producing heavy rain are moving across the warned area. Doppler radar showed up to 2 inches of rain had already fallen Saturday on ground already soaked by rain over the past several days, with up to another 1.5 inches possible through 6:00 PM MDT. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
Local impacts: The Weather Service warns of life-threatening flash flooding. Normally dry arroyos, streams, and rivers can turn into raging waterways, and low-water crossings in hilly and mountainous terrain can become dangerous quickly in heavy rain.
What to do:
- Do not drive on flooded roads. Turn around, do not drown. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.
- If you meet a flooded crossing, find an alternate route and stay aware of your surroundings.
- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
