# Flash Flood Warning for Kauai Through 6:30 AM HST

**Hanalei, Hawaii —** A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for the island of Kauai through 6:30 AM HST this morning.

**What is happening:** The National Weather Service office in Honolulu issued the warning after local law enforcement reported flooding in and around the town of Hanalei. Moderate to heavy rain continues over parts of the island, and the Hanalei River is running over the Hanalei Bridge — the bridge has been closed since 3:45 AM as river water inundated the crossing. Floodwaters are also rising on small streams and in poor-drainage spots across the north and east sides of the island.

**Local impacts:** Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, plus urban streets, highways, underpasses, and low-lying neighborhoods. Communities in the flood zone include Kapaa, Princeville, Kilauea, Hanalei, Wainiha, Haena, Moloaa, Wailua Homesteads, and the Na Pali Coast and Kokee State Park areas, along with North Fork Wailua Trails and Alakai Swamp Trails. Anyone in Hanalei should treat the bridge closure as a hard barrier — do not attempt to cross.

**What to do:**

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive through flooded roads. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Do not walk or drive across the Hanalei Bridge or any flooded crossing.

- It is still dark on Kauai; be extra careful, because floodwaters are much harder to see and judge at night.

- If water is rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
