What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the island of Kauai in Kauai County, in effect until 2:45 PM HST on Saturday, October 31. Doppler radar and automated rain gauges showed heavy rain falling over the eastern slopes of Mount Waialeale, with more heavy rain moving into the leeward side of the island. Rain was falling at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour. A rapid rise was also observed at the Hanalei River gauge upstream of Hanalei Town. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, especially near the Hanalei Bridge on Kuhio Highway.

Local impacts:

Fast-rising water on roads and near streams and rivers, with the greatest concern around the Hanalei Bridge area. Heavy rain at 1 to 3 inches per hour can flood low-lying roads quickly and turn normally small streams into dangerous, fast-moving water.

What to do:

- Turn around, do not drown. Never drive through flooded roads.

- Most flood deaths happen in vehicles, so stay out of flooded areas on foot as well.

- Know where you are relative to streams, rivers, and creeks, which can become deadly in heavy rain.

- Campers and hikers should stay away from streams and creeks.

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
