Flash Flood Warning for Kane and Washington Counties Through 6:00 PM

UPDATE — Sunday, October 11, 4:10 PM CT: The National Weather Service has extended the Flash Flood Warning for central Washington County — including the Forsyth burn scar — through 6:15 PM Mountain Time. Emergency managers report heavy rain over the burn scar, with river gauges running high along the Santa Clara River. Between an inch and a quarter and two and a quarter inches of rain have fallen, and flash flooding is ongoing around Pine Valley. Burn scars are especially dangerous in heavy rain: water runs off faster and can trigger debris flows of rock, mud, and loose material that wash out roads and driveways.
Southern Utah — The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a Flash Flood Warning for west-central Kane County and east-central Washington County, in effect until 6:00 PM Mountain Time.
What is happening: National Park Service officials reported thunderstorms dumping heavy rain across the warned area around 2:59 PM, with flash flooding already underway. Between a half inch and an inch of rain has fallen so far, and the storms are still producing.
Local impacts: Life-threatening flash flooding of creeks and normally dry washes is ongoing. Roads through the warned area can flood quickly with little warning.
What to do:
- Turn around, don't drown — never drive through flooded roads.
- Most flood deaths happen in vehicles; it only takes a few inches of moving water to sweep a car away.
- Move to higher ground immediately if you see water rising around you.
