Flash Flood Warning for Howard, Mitchell, and Scurry Counties Through 10:00 AM

Breaking news alert for flash floods in Texas counties.

Howard, Mitchell, and Scurry Counties, Texas — The National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Howard, Mitchell, and Scurry Counties in western Texas, in effect through 10:00 AM Central Time on Friday, October 30.

What is happening: Showers producing heavy rain are moving across the warned area. Doppler radar and automated rain gauges show between a half inch and 1 inch of rain has already fallen, with up to 1 additional inch possible. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

Local impacts: Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms can swamp low-lying roads, small streams, and drainage areas in a short time. Even a few inches of fast-moving water can knock a person down and stall or sweep away a vehicle.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown. Never drive through a flooded road — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Stay aware of your surroundings and keep off flooded roads entirely.

- Report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement so the information can reach the National Weather Service.

- If water starts rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
