# Flash Flood Warning for Guadalupe and San Miguel Counties, NM Through 8:30 PM

San Miguel County, New Mexico — The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northwestern Guadalupe County and southwestern San Miguel County until 8:30 PM Mountain time tonight, as a cluster of thunderstorms soaks the area and flash flooding gets underway.

## What is happening:

At 5:32 PM Mountain time, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across the warned area. Up to an inch and a half of rain has already fallen, and another inch is possible before the storms move on. The Weather Service says flash flooding is happening in places and could start quickly in others.

The warned area covers northwestern Guadalupe County in east-central New Mexico and southwestern San Miguel County in the northeastern part of the state. The warning runs through 8:30 PM Mountain time.

## Local impacts:

Expect flash flooding of small creeks and streams, along with water rising across streets, highways, underpasses, and other low-lying and poor-drainage areas. The Weather Service flags the rain as radar-indicated, meaning forecasters are seeing the heavy totals on radar and flooding is already developing.

## What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive on a flooded road. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Do not try to cross flooded roads or low water crossings; find another way around.

- Arroyos, streams, and normally dry riverbeds can turn into fast, deadly currents in minutes — and floodwater can travel miles downstream from rain that fell upstream hours ago.
