# Flash Flood Warning for Grant, Luna and Sierra Counties Through 10:15 AM MDT

**Grant, Luna and Sierra Counties, N.M. —** A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for southwestern Sierra County, east-central Grant County, and north-central Luna County in southern New Mexico through 10:15 AM MDT.

**What is happening:** The National Weather Service in El Paso/Santa Teresa issued the warning at 7:16 AM MDT after Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across the warned area. Between a half-inch and an inch of rain has already fallen, and up to another inch is possible. Flash flooding is happening now in some spots and could start quickly in others, including the Lake Valley area.

**Local impacts:** Flash flooding can hit fast in small creeks and streams, in town, on highways and streets, at underpasses, and in other low spots and poor-drainage areas. Arroyos and rivers can turn into raging currents in minutes, even from rain falling far away.

**What to do:**

- Turn around, don't drown. Never drive onto flooded roads — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Do not drive or walk through moving water.

- Stay out of arroyos, streams, and drainage ditches until the storms are completely gone.

- Remain alert even where it is not raining; flooding can arrive from upstream.
