Flash Flood Warning for Grant County Through 12:15 AM MDT

Grant County, NM — The National Weather Service in El Paso/Santa Teresa has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northwestern Grant County in southwestern New Mexico, in effect until 12:15 AM MDT.
**What is happening:** Doppler radar is picking up a line of thunderstorms dumping heavy rain across the warned area. Between three-quarters of an inch and an inch and a quarter of rain has already fallen, and another inch is possible before the storms move out. Flash flooding is either happening now or is about to start in the warned area.
**Local impacts:** Fast-rising water on small creeks and streams, in town areas, along highways, streets, and underpasses, and anywhere drainage is poor or the ground sits low. Communities in the path of this water include Cliff, Redrock, Riverside, Gila, Bill Evans Lake, and the Gila Middle Box. Arroyos and normally dry washes can turn into dangerous, fast-moving currents within minutes — even in spots where it is not raining, since water can rush down from miles away.
**What to do:**
- Never drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don't drown — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.
- Be extra careful after dark. It is much harder to see floodwater at night.
- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
- Stay out of arroyos, washes, and low-water crossings until this warning expires.
