# Flash Flood Warning for Grant and Luna Counties Through 9:45 AM MDT

**Grant and Luna Counties, N.M. —** A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for east-central Grant County and northwestern Luna County in southwestern New Mexico through 9:45 AM MDT.

**What is happening:** The National Weather Service in El Paso/Santa Teresa issued the warning at 6:46 AM MDT after Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across the warned area. Between a half-inch and an inch of rain has already fallen, and up to another inch is possible before the storms let up. Flash flooding is happening now in some places and could start quickly anywhere in the warning area, including Faywood and the Butterfield Trail Estates.

**Local impacts:** Flash flooding can hit fast in small creeks and streams, on highways and city streets, at underpasses, and in other low spots and poor-drainage areas. Water can also run into places far from where the rain fell, so danger is not limited to the spots getting rained on right now.

**What to do:**

- Remember "turn around, don't drown." Never drive onto flooded roads — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Be aware of your surroundings and do not walk through moving water either.

- If you see flooding, report it to local emergency services or law enforcement when you can do so safely, and ask them to pass it on to the National Weather Service.

- Stay out of arroyos and drainage ditches until the storms are completely gone.
