Flash Flood Warning for Grant and Luna Counties Through 8:45 AM

**Grant and Luna Counties, N.M. —** A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for south-central Grant County and northwestern Luna County in southwestern New Mexico through 8:45 AM MDT.

**What is happening:** The National Weather Service in El Paso/Santa Teresa issued the warning at 6:20 AM MDT after Doppler radar picked up slow-moving thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across the warned area. More than an inch of rain has already fallen in spots, and another inch is possible before the storms move on. Flash flooding is happening now in some places and could start quickly anywhere in the warning area.

**Local impacts:** Roads and low-lying areas can flood fast in this part of the state, and desert washes — arroyos — can turn into fast, dangerous currents in minutes, even in places that never saw a drop of rain. Streams and small rivers in Grant and Luna Counties can rise sharply under this kind of downpour.

**What to do:**

- Never drive through flooded roads or around barricades — it takes very little moving water to carry a vehicle away.

- Remember "Turn around, don't drown." Most flood deaths happen in cars.

- Stay alert even if the sky over your neighborhood looks clear — flooding can come from storms upstream.

- Keep an eye on arroyos, ditches, and small creeks, and move to higher ground at the first sign of rising water.
