Flash Flood Warning for Grant and Luna Counties Through 6:30 PM MDT
Deming, New Mexico — The National Weather Service in El Paso/Santa Teresa has issued a Flash Flood Warning for southeastern Grant County and northwestern Luna County, in effect through 6:30 PM MDT.
What is happening:
At 3:28 PM MDT, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dumping heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen, and up to another half inch is possible. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
Local impacts:
Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Arroyos, streams, and dry washes can turn into raging, deadly currents within minutes — even from rainfall miles away.
What to do:
- Turn around, don't drown when you reach a flooded road. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.
- Never attempt to cross flooded roads — find an alternate route.
- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
- Stay alert for flooding even where it is not raining.
