Flash Flood Warning for Gila and Yavapai Counties Through 8:00 PM

Fossil Creek, AZ — What is happening: The National Weather Service in Flagstaff has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Gila County in east central Arizona and Yavapai County in west central Arizona, in effect until 8:00 PM MST tonight. At 2:05 PM, repeated heavy thunderstorms caused a nearly 8-foot rise in Fossil Creek — flash flooding is ongoing. Local impacts: The Weather Service is calling this life-threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, normally dry washes, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Anyone at the swimming holes and waterfalls along Fossil Creek — including Fossil Creek Dam — and in the Fossil Springs Wilderness needs to move now. What to do: - If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately. - Never drive through flooded roads — turn around, don't drown. - Get away from creek banks, swimming holes and waterfalls at once. - Do not attempt to cross flooded washes or low-water crossings.
