Flash Flood Warning for Gila and Maricopa Counties Through 1:15 PM MST

**Phoenix, Ariz. —** Life-threatening flash flooding is hitting central Arizona this afternoon, and the National Weather Service in Phoenix has extended a Flash Flood Warning for parts of Gila and Maricopa counties until 1:15 PM MST Sunday.

**What is happening:** At 11:04 AM MST, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges showed thunderstorms dumping heavy rain over the Sand Stone and Spring burn scars in Gila County and across parts of northeast Maricopa County. Between three-quarters of an inch and 2 inches of rain have already fallen, and flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. On a burn scar, that much rain can trigger debris flows — fast-moving walls of rock, mud, vegetation and loose material.

**Local impacts:** Heavy rain will cause extensive and severe flash flooding of creeks, streams and ditches around the burn scars. Severe debris flows can sweep across roads without warning, and roads and driveways may be washed away in places.

**What to do:**

- Never drive through flooded roads — turn around, don't drown. Just a few inches of moving water can sweep a car away.

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

- Stay out of burn-scar drainages, washes and low-water crossings.
