Evangeline and Rapides Parishes, Louisiana — UPDATE — Sunday, November 1, 3:43 AM CT: the warning for northeastern Evangeline Parish now runs through 7:45 AM, with radar showing up to 10 inches of rain already fallen there. The National Weather Service in Lake Charles has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northwestern Evangeline Parish and south central Rapides Parish in central Louisiana, in effect through 7:45 AM Sunday.
What is happening: Thunderstorms dropping heavy rain moved across the warned area early Sunday morning. Radar showed between 3 and 7 inches of rain had already fallen, and flash flooding is underway or expected to begin shortly across low-lying and poor-drainage spots.
Local impacts: Small creeks and streams can rise quickly, and water can cover urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Roads that look passable can hide deep water, and conditions can change fast in the dark.
What to do: Never drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don't drown — most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Stay away from creeks, streams, and drainage areas where water is rising. If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately. Keep clear of underpasses and low-water crossings until the warning ends.
