El Paso, Texas — A line of thunderstorms dropping torrential rain has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Flash Flood Warning for east central El Paso County until 8:30 tonight.

What is happening:

The Weather Service office in El Paso/Santa Teresa put the warning out at 7:02 PM MDT. A band of slow-moving storms is hammering parts of the city east of Downtown and south of Montana, stretching through Horizon City, the Lower Valley, and the colonias east of Horizon. Radar shows rainfall rates high enough to overwhelm streets and drainage, and forecasters say flash flooding of arroyos, highways, underpasses, and low spots is already underway or about to begin.

Local impacts:

Communities in the path of the flooding include El Paso east of downtown and south of Montana — Mission Valley, Horizon City, Clint, San Elizario, Socorro, Sparks, Agua Dulce, Dairyland, and Lake Way Estates. The Sparks arroyo is expected to flood, along with flood-prone areas and low-water crossings in Socorro and Clint. Water can rise fast in normally dry arroyos, and flooding is harder to spot after dark.

What to do:

- Do not drive through flooded roads — turn around and find another way.

- Be extra careful tonight; it is harder to see floodwater at night.

- Stay aware of your surroundings and never walk through moving water.
