Curry County, N.M. — The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for eastern Curry County and east-central Roosevelt County in east-central New Mexico, in effect through 11:15 PM Mountain Time tonight.

What is happening: Doppler radar at 8:10 PM showed thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across the warned area. Up to an inch of rain had already fallen, with up to another inch and a half still possible as the storms roll through. A flash flood is a sudden rise of water — small creeks, streams, and city streets can flood fast, sometimes in a matter of minutes.

Local impacts: Flash flooding is expected in low-lying spots, along small creeks and streams, and in urban and poor-drainage areas. Flooded roadways are likely, and the danger is greater after dark, when standing water is much harder to spot from behind the wheel.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown — never drive through a flooded road; just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and a foot can sweep a car away.

- Move to higher ground if you live near a creek, arroyo, or low-water crossing.

- Watch for water rising around you, especially tonight when it is harder to see.

- Do not walk or drive into areas where water is flowing over the road — you cannot tell how deep it is or whether the road is still there underneath.
