Clovis, NM —

What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Curry County and Roosevelt County in eastern New Mexico, in effect until 11:15 PM MDT. Doppler radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain Friday night. Between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain has already fallen, and up to an inch more is possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is underway or expected to begin shortly.

Local impacts:

Flooding is expected on small creeks and streams, in urban areas, on highways, streets and underpasses, and in other low-lying spots with poor drainage. Communities in the path include Clovis, Ranchvale, Cannon Air Force Base, Saint Vrain, Oasis State Park, Broadview, Bellview, Portair and Pleasant Hill.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown. Never drive into flooded roads — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Be especially careful at night. It is much harder to recognize the dangers of flooding after dark.

- If water is rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
